Helping Schools

After hearing about the conditions at one of the local state schools near to our Nepalese workshop, we offered to help.

The school is for socially and economically disadvantaged children who are trying to improve their quality of life.

Last week we were delighted to provide the school with ceiling fans for each classroom, ensuring the classrooms are usable during the hotter months. Also, we provided all of the children with new summer sports clothes.

We passionately believe in supporting our Nepalese community and doing what we can to help.

We may be a month away from winter yet, but it’s definitely getting colder and Christmas is very rapidly approaching. Time to break out the hat and gloves and what better way to do that than with a Black Yak fair trade, hand knitted wool hat and gloves combo?

Autumn is here and its time to put the shorts away and dig out the woollens. Working from home is great but it does mean that we have to pay for the heating, not the office. We don’t lose 30% of body heat through the head as the US military thought in the ‘50s, but we do lose between 7 and 10%. That’s still a lot and makes investing in a good wool hat a very good idea. Wool is the ultimate insulator and is one of the most breathable fibres around. After all, it kept polar explorers and mountain climbers warm and safe from frostbite long before synthetic fabrics were invented. It’s been keeping sheep warm for quite some time as well.

Hat days are here again

We don’t think that 2020 will be forgotten for a long time and we hope that you are all coping with the very many challenges that this year has thrown at us all.

As with everybody else Black Yak is having to do things a little differently this year. Things are taking longer to make and get to us and many of our regular events throughout the year and Christmas Fairs have been cancelled. They are all sadly missed as we do enjoy meeting and chatting with our customers.
However, our web site is very popular and we are finding that many people are shopping early for Christmas.

As with the rest of the world, it seems that Covid is getting worse in Nepal. They have now had 55,329 cases and 360 deaths. The authorities have had to ease some restrictions after the ‘business community and wage earners complained of financial hardship’. I guess that they are having to balance civil unrest with public health just as we are in this country. Now shops can only open on certain days depending upon what they are selling and transport is allowed on the roads with an odd/even number plate system.
